Activating the street level of Dubai’s financial hub, Orijins Coffee Shop draws inspiration from flaws and imperfections apparent in nature. Throughout the space, there is an amalgamation of contrasts between forms, surfaces, and furnishings. VSHD approached the design brief as an interior with sanctitude, one that celebrates nature and calls attention to living in tune with the landscape.
The emotions evoked while being in this space are reminiscent of sitting on a rock by the sea or standing in the vast desert. Uncomplicated forms and rich textures are found in a subdued palette of muted plaster and opaque creamy hues suggestive of sand, shells, stone and wood. These are paired with large blocks, uneven rocks and graceful lightweight metal furnishings that subtly complement the more curvaceous elements. A curved, unfamiliar form departing from a typical coffee bar anchors the space, acting as a light and airy element despite being constructed as a solid block made of various marbles.
Deliberately designed considering all elements of nature, when sunlight enters the space, it drizzles a composed arrangement of shadows on the plastered walls. The enigmatic and mystifying sensation is further explored as VSHD deploys a slim LED lighting strip to emphasise the gentle arch in the ceiling, giving it an understated glow. Small spotlights and custom wall lights in brushed aluminium decorate the spare walls.
Although the absence of colour is starkly obvious, visitors are induced to appreciate the space’s forms that bring the interior to life. Both calming and grounding, Orijins Coffee Shop is an idyllic oasis found in the heart of Dubai. Despite being a scheme that extracts influence from nature, it strays away from stereotypical biophilic design and reinvents the wheel – VSHD lets nature innovatively take the lead. Orijins is the ideal place for any coffee aficionado who wants to enjoy their beverage alongside negative space and natural environment acting as the defining elements.
